I've ordered from Magazines.com before as a way to get subscriptions at a great discount, but this post is about a program that lets you use their good prices to do something nice for someone else.
They have a "Subscription for Soldiers" program that enables you to make a donation of magazine subscriptions to active servicemen and servicewomen stationed overseas. The cost to donate a subscription is just $10.
If you know a specific service member and wish to give them the gift, that's an option available. But for many of us who don't know a particular soldier, marine, sailor or airman but want to make a contribution, this program offers a chance to give a little something as a gesture of thanks.
The program lets servicemen and servicewomen indicate three magazines they'd be interested in receiving. When the company gets your donation, Magazines.com provides the subscription to a service member. It's done anonymously -- they don't get to know the donor and you don't get to know the recipient. It's more of a random act of kindness.
Since this program is not being run by a non-profit agency, the donation isn't tax-deductible so don't do it for that reason. But if you feel like making a gesture that might brighten some days for a young man or young woman serving far from home, this may be worthwhile.
