Those of you who've been reading my blog for a while are familiar with restaurant.com, and the occasional promo codes they issue to make a good deal even better. They now have a promo code offering 70% off all their certificates or dinner-of-the-month club when ordered by May 16th. If you know about restaurant.com and don't need to read details, skip down to the bottom of this blog entry for the code and a link that takes you right there.

For anyone who hasn't yet heard of restaurant.com, here are some details. They sell certificates with dining credit at thousands of participating restaurants around the country. Typically, dining certificates for $25.00 worth of dining at a restaurant sell for $10.00, saving you $15.00 when you go out and dine. With the discount code, those same certificates cost you just $3.00, meaning you would save $22.00 when you go out and eat.

Each certificate comes with restaurant-specific restrictions -- the most common for $25.00 certificates seems to be that the check has to total at least $35.00 before the certificate is applied (sometimes the amount is more so always check before ordering your certificate(s). Sometimes, it's just a requirement to order two entrees, Sometimes it's a minimum number of diners. The restrictions are clearly indicated on the detail page for any restaurant that's participating. I've used these certificates for several years now, and for the most part the restrictions are easy to achieve in the course of a normal dining out experience.

In addition to the $25.00 certificates, many restaurants also offer $10.00 certificates, usually valid at lunchtime. Again, these come with some restrictions, i.e. minimum of $20.00 on the check). Those usually cost $3.00 and now with the promo code are just 90¢ apiece. So you can get some great savings at lunchtimes too.

They also have a dinner-of-the-month club you can join for 3, 6 or 12 months. Basically they send you a certificate each month that you can redeem at any of the participating restaurants. One reason you might consider this could be as a gift to someone to make it easier for him or her to eat out without you picking the restaurant. Another might be to take advantage of early parts of months when some of the most popular restaurants haven't sold out their certificates yet. Very often, at the start of a month, promo codes (if any) save you a lower percentage, and later in the month when the promo codes are better your favorite restaurant may be sold out. With a dinner-of-the-month certificate in your account, you could go in early the next month and redeem it for that popular restaurant and get the savings of this great promo code.

I recommend this deal as a great way to try out new places, visit an old favorite more often (you can use certificates for any one place no more often than once a month, and each certificate is valid for a year), maybe order that special appetizer or dessert, and enjoy some tasty savings.

If you have a child going away to college, this might also be a nice treat to help him or her get a break from dorm cafeteria food every so often.

Those warehouse clubs like Costco®, BJ's® and Sam's Club® are famous for having great savings, especially if you have a large family and need to buy items in bulk. They also often have great savings on electronics and things for the home, which may make sense regardless of whether or not you have a large family. Those savings, however, need to be weighed against the cost of club memberships. If you don't shop there often enough, the membership cost can eat away most or all of any savings you might find.

Sometime these clubs offer short-term passes to allow non-members to shop there, which gives people a chance to check them out and see if it's worth joining. However, those passes often carry with them a surcharge when you shop -- you don't get the lowest member price, you might pay 10% more. So while you are saving some off the retail price or what you might find in nearby stores, it's not quite as big a savings.

But here's a pass for one day of shopping at Sam's Club® with no upcharge. So you pay whatever the member discounted price is, and get all the savings benefits. This one-day membership pass is valid until May 25th and it needs to be activated at the Membership Desk.
